Lisa & Jeremiah - Las Vegas LDS Temple Wedding

It's the middle of February and the trees are already blossoming in Vegas. Al Gore might say that's scary, but it is perfect timing for Lisa and Jeremiah's big day, and that's all that really matters, right? Jessica & Rusty - Las Vegas Temple Wedding Photographer

I've been keeping pretty busy lately, which I am more than grateful for. I am even more grateful for the awesome clients I've had to keep me busy. Jessica and Rusty are a perfect example of that. And because of their awesomeness (I don't like that word. Ashley & Zach - Las Vegas Temple Wedding

As I struggled to keep my truck in one lane on the freeway, battling giant gusts of wind and flying debris, I glanced out the window to see an enormous dust cloud barreling across the Las Vegas valley. Not the kind of dust cloud which pushes a tumbleweed into your yard and then gently blows away. This was the kind of dust cloud in which you could almost make out the face of the Mummy. In a moment like this, your first thought most likely isn't, "What a great day for a wedding!" But none of this mattered for Ashley and Zach. They were all smiles from start to finish. Looking at their pictures, you wouldn't even know that we took them in the middle of a tornado. So when life gives you 40mph lemons, just do like these two and make some sweet, sweet lemonade. LVAC Cover Shoot

I've had to wait a little while for the Las Vegas Athletic Clubs to print the newest issue of their magazine before I could write this post. I always have a great time putting together these shoots for LVAC. Not only do we always have great models to work with, but I leave feeling halfway motivated to work off my newly formed gut. So it's a win-win for everyone. I'm really pleased with how this shoot turned out. Thanks to everyone at the Las Vegas Athletic Clubs once again. Nick - Las Vegas Missionary Portraits

Took Nick out for a quick hour of portraits yesterday at a couple of random locations we stumbled upon after about 2 blocks of driving. It's pretty convenient when things happen that way. Nick will be leaving to the Missionary Training Center in Provo in a few weeks and then off to the Dominican Republic for 2 years to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I'm sure he's gonna have a few stories to tell all of us spoiled Americans pretty soon. And I think he got some good practice as a missionary on this shoot, with all of the people who gave us dirty looks as he rode around and I chased him in the middle of the street, camera in-tow. Ryann & Zak - Revere Golf Club Wedding

Had the opportunity to shoot Zak and Ryann on their wedding day this past weekend at the Revere Golf Club in Las Vegas. It seriously seems like a week ago since I was laughing my head off with them downtown for their engagement shoot, now their all married up. Crazy how time flies. It's also crazy how fly this couple is. I've known both of them a long time, and the more I get to know them, the more I like them. They just love life, and they love each other, and they throw the bird to everything else. That's the way it should be done ladies and gentlemen. So here's to you guys. Brittany & Roland - Las Vegas temple wedding

A last minute change in schedule followed almost immediately by an email from Brittany meant I was able to spend a couple of hours with Brittany and Roland at the Las Vegas temple after their wedding this past weekend. It was so last minute that the first time I really spoke with them was after I started shooting them! But I'm glad everything worked out the way it did because I had a lot of fun with these two. And I'm pretty sure these two are in love since I couldn't hardly separate Roland from his new wife for a few of the shots. It was like trying to take a bone out of a dog's mouth. But that just meant those smiles were genuine, and I always like that. Congratulations guys, all the best. (Click on pics to enlarge)

LVAC Cover Shoot

I recently had the opportunity and privilege of shooting the cover and some content for the Las Vegas Athletic Club Magazine. I love the jobs that don't feel like jobs while I'm doing them. I had such a good time covering this. This cover focused on the "Celebration of Young Women Athletes", which is an event LVAC holds every year to honor young women athletes who excel in athletics and academics from every high school in the valley. It really is a great program that they put on, with nothing expected in return. Much thanks to all at LVAC for your generosity (Connie Stewart, Kristi Bowman, Kim Plucker, Chad Smith, Troy Doss).

You Got Framed

I had a print of my photograph "Solace" framed for a client a little while back. I knew it would come out nice, but I didn't know it would come out THIS nice. The print was 16"x24", with a 4" double mat and a 4" burl wood veneer frame, so it came out to 32"x40". Pretty big, and more than worth it. When juggling a lot of work, school, married life, and moving twice, personal interests kinda take a back seat for a while. But now that the boxes are unpacked, the toilet paper is hung with care, and I finally have a few days off, I decided to get back to catching up with the ol' blog. First item on the agenda: our honeymoon. I know, it's not really related to any of my little business, but I figure everyone likes to see pictures of tropical islands, so get over it. This trip was also the maiden voyage of my homemade underwater housing for my camera, so it was a pretty exciting time for me. I'm not one for narrating every little thing, because I know no one really cares, so just go ahead and enjoy the pictures of our week in Barbados... (as always, click on the pics to enlarge them)

It's hotter than all get out here in Vegas lately, and these two make it even hotter. Ow ow! Just kidding. I did have a lot of fun last Saturday with Juan and Lindsay though, even though it really was extremely hot at the beginning of our session. But we waited out the sun with a few laughs and then we cranked out some great shots of these two enjoying their engaged life together. I've known Juan for a long time, so it's nice to see him with someone like Lindsay who can keep him in check and make him smile all at the same time. Just kidding again. Maybe...

Back to the Drawing Board

After having been 'motivated' (some would say chewed out) by several family members and friends, I've decided to focus more of my energies on my fine art. So, as my painting portfolio has been expanding, I've noticed that my canvases just don't seem to have that 'finished' quality to them. And after spending $350 dollars to have a photography print custom framed for a client (I'll post the print after the client receives it), I decided that there just has to be a more economical way. So, I set out to figure out how to make my own wood frames. And me being me, I can't just do with a typical piece of wood cut into a frame, so I developed a long, tedious, and complex process to make my custom made frames. 2 down..... a lot more than 2 to go. Sarah's Getting Old

I got to take my cousin Sarah out this week to do some senior pics for her. For clarification, I do NOT currently book senior sessions, but maybe one of these days... I can't believe Sarah's actually graduating. I don't know how it's even possible since she's still 12 years old, but regardless, the big day is coming up for her. It kinda turned into a family event ending with Sarah singing us one of her songs out in the bushes. Sound magical? It was. Seriously though, keep an eye out for this girl, because she's one of the most talented song writers I've ever heard. Maybe one of these days she'll record something so I can post it on my website. Karla & Derek - Las Vegas temple wedding

I have shot weddings almost every weekend for the last 3 months straight, and EVERY ONE has been in the wind, cold, rain, or a combination of these. But Karla and Derek must have made a deal with the man in charge, because all of these elements let up for about half of the day last Saturday to give them a bright, sunny day for their wedding. They were married at the LDS Las Vegas temple and I got to spend some time with them on the temple grounds to capture their day together. I couldn't ask for a better couple to shoot. Christmas came and it went, and now I'm finally blogging about the absolute best time of the year. Now that it's over, I started my paper chain for Christmas 2011. That's how much I love it. But I should report on what happened Christmas 2010 first. We've got some news...

I had a PRESENT that I needed to give to Staci before Christmas morning, but I didn't have much time to spend alone with her during the days leading up to Christmas, so I planned a day for the two of us on Christmas eve. But then families wanted to get together, and after all was said and done, we had about 2 hours of alone time. The ulcers were building. I scrapped my plans, grabbed a short Christmas video, and we headed to the mountains for our romantic 2 hour getaway. The palms were sweating.

I had to hide my nervousness with normal activity, so we found some wild horses and I took some quick pics. Photography is difficult when your whole body has a case of tremors.

We drove up to the snow and watched a Christmas film in the back of my truck. I don't think I payed attention to one second of the movie. Pulse was erratic. Breathing was anything but steady. My body was shutting down.

I told Staci that we should take a picture in the snow since we never got one together in Montana. I set up one camera and brought the other one with me so I could show Staci the cool pictures that I got of the horses (the pictures were crap, I just needed to snap something quick to help the process move along without detection. I am a ninja. A shaky ninja in the middle of a heart attack)

Staci said, "Oh, those are cool", but her face said, "Oh, these are crap". It's ok, I knew that already. I said, "Ooh, but look at the next ones". They didn't get any better, they were identical to the first one. Bless Staci's heart for acting like she liked them. The next images were different though. They were pictures that I had taken beforehand.

Staci looked at me completely confused as I got on one knee. Confusion isn't the look I was going for, but I needed an ambulance more than anything by that point anyways. I mumbled out something that I'm sure was extremely eloquent, and pulled a box out of my pocket. The confused look didn't go away. Is this going smoothly? Are my legs still attached to my body?

I've photographed a lot of weddings, but I was completely oblivious as to what all of those men had to go through to get to that point.

She said no, but we worked things out.

I thought I'd take a break from endlessly writing papers to catch up on things that give me a reason to not write papers. Like singing in the mirror. And chasing butterflies. And updating my blog. (That was a joke, I don't ever want to watch myself sing. I can already hear how bad my singing is, I don't want to SEE it too. You can make up your own mind about whether or not the butterflies thing is true though) So since I can't post any of my recent weddings, since they've all been on contract for a local studio for the past while, I'll post some recent pictures of my nephew. I'm Alive

This whole blogging thing has turned out to be a little difficult to keep up on. But, I've made a mid-August new year's resolution to be better at it. But instead of trying to catch up on everything I've been up to lately, I'll just start with today.

I've always hated working with prime lenses (lenses that can't be zoomed), but there's a lot of photographers out there that swear by them, so I devoted our entire recent fishing trip to using my 50mm. While I still think prime lenses are completely inconvenient, it was a very enlightening little experiment with some pleasing results. I might just do it again.

Kerr & Trussel Family - Nelson Nevada family pictures

It might seem that the remedy for not "preferring" to do family photography might be to just not do it at all. But in this case, the remedy was to just add more people. And then a few more. It also helps when the leader of the pack doesn't give you much of a choice. ( Just kidding Lynn :) ) Just make sure that huge group is a fun bunch of people like the Kerr/Trussel family.

A Full Day

So I finally recently caved and made a little, much-needed, upgrade. This little post is for those of you who are photographers working with speedlights, and you're still using the little remotes from China that you get off of Ebay. For the rest of you, just look at the pretty pictures, cause the rest of this text will probably bore you out of your mind.

I debated for a loooong time about whether to get Pocket Wizards or Skyports, but kept putting off the decision due to having the funds of a college student. Then one day, after working for the unreliable Chinese remotes for the um-teenth time on a shoot, I snapped. I had to get one or the other before my next shoot, no matter what. Luckily, a friend and old college instructor, Chris Waters, got to me and encouraged me to purchase the Skyports as I was on my way to get some Pocket Wizards (which would have equalled about $550 for a full set-up). I was worried that buying the Skyports (which are literally half the price of Pocket Wizards) would just mean more days of unreliability and frustration. But I must say, over the last 3 weeks, I have already fired them several thousand times without any misfires or disappointment. In this case, you can put a price on happiness, and for me it's $275.

I took my cousins, Sarah, Braxton and Weston out after Thanksgiving dinner to snap a few sports/music pics. They were reluctant to be out in the cold taking pictures, until they saw a sample of the kind of stuff we were getting. Then I got the enthusiasm I needed for some awesome pictures. My little nephew's Halloween pics were well overdue by this point, so we snuck those in too. Unfortunately though, all of this shooting meant no nap for me after Thanksgiving dinner.

Ashley & Seth - Downtown Las Vegas Engagement

I wish I had the energy that these two posess. There's never a dull moment with them, which makes for a pleasant experience on a photoshoot. Ashley and Seth are just full of life and I'm sure that they will have a full life together. We didn't have much to work with or time to plan due to complications, so we just took our party to downtown Vegas and made a good time out of what we found along the way...

These two kids are the best, to put it simply. They're my cousin's little kids, and they are hilarious. And when it came time to pose them like little dolls and snap that perfectly composed traditional family picture, they would have absolutely none of it. So, I was able to employ my preferred style of documentary photography as I chased them around with a camera in my hand and a prayer in my heart, hoping to catch a few of those 'moments'.

Kade & Lindsey's Wedding

A halloween wedding. I don't think I've ever been to one before, but when you combine the pure talents of my family members and a great couple like Kade and Lindsey, you get one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever seen. I wasn't the hired photographer at this shindig, but I love photographing weddings, especially outdoor ones, so I obtained permission to snap a few pics as I tried to stay out of the other photographer's way. Besides, it's my family, so I had to document the occasion purely out of moral obligation.
Once again, I'd like to give a shout out to my endlessly talented family. These people could decorate and cater to royalty. And to Kade and Lindsey, it really was a pleasure to be at this wedding. I might have even been close to crying a couple of times. Maybe.

Ryan and Michelle's Wedding

Well, the couple had a crazy day, and we all had to be on our toes, but in the end everything came together beautifully. When nothing that you plan ends up working out, it's great to have a couple that is completely natural in front of the camera. I absolutely love it when I get to work with people who need little to no direction. They just did their thing, and I recorded it.

Meanwhile, I'm still brand new to this blog thing, so I still need to learn how to thin out the pics I decide to post a little more, but we just captured too many great moments, so this is the best I can do for now. Enjoy.
